PLO5 Odds Calculator (5-Card Omaha)
PLO5 (five-card Pot-Limit Omaha) deals each player five hole cards instead of four. You still make your hand with exactly two hole cards and three board cards, but with five cards there are ten possible two-card combinations instead of six, so almost every hand makes more draws and stronger made hands. Select the PLO-5 variant in the calculator above to check five-card equities.
- ◆Equities run even closer together than in four-card PLO, so preflop confrontations are more of a coinflip and post-flop skill matters more.
- ◆Premium starting hands are stronger on average, which pulls everyone's equity toward the middle and makes big preflop edges rarer.
- ◆Nut draws and blockers become more important because more players connect with more boards.
- ◆Because hands are closer, position and pot control carry even more weight than they do in Hold'em or PLO-4.
Example
A double-suited five-card hand like A♠A♥K♠K♥Q♦ can flop a huge number of draws and redraws, but even a monster like this rarely holds more than around 60-65% equity heads-up preflop — much less than pocket aces in Hold'em. Run it in the calculator to see how quickly the equity flattens out multi-way.
Prefer six cards? PLO-6 (six-card Omaha) pushes this even further — fifteen two-card combinations per hand and the tightest equities of all. Switch to the PLO-6 variant above to compare six-card runouts.
Hold'em vs PLO Equity Comparison
The same-looking hand behaves very differently in Omaha than in Texas Hold'em. Because PLO players hold more cards and must use exactly two, big preflop favorites shrink and equities bunch together. If you mainly play Hold'em, check the same spots in our Poker Odds Calculator to feel the contrast.
| Situation (heads-up, all-in preflop) | Hold'em (approx.) | PLO-4 (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Best pair vs second-best pair | ~82% / 18% | ~65% / 35% |
| Big pair vs two overcards | ~55% / 45% | ~60% / 40% |
| Strongest hand vs random hand | up to ~85% | rarely above ~70% |
| Typical "race" spot | ~50% / 50% | closer to 55% / 45% |
Figures are approximate, rounded, and depend on the exact cards and suits. PLO values assume four-card Omaha; five- and six-card variants bunch even tighter. Run your own hands in the calculator for precise equities.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do PLO odds differ from Texas Hold'em?
In PLO, each player receives 4 hole cards instead of 2, and you must use exactly 2 hole cards plus 3 community cards to make your hand. This creates far more possible hand combinations, which means equities run much closer together. A hand with 60% equity in PLO is a much bigger favorite than the same percentage in Hold'em.
What are the best starting hands in PLO?
The strongest PLO starting hands feature four coordinated cards that work together. Top hands include double-suited aces like AAKKds, rundown hands like JT98ds, and double-paired hands with suits. Unlike Hold'em where pocket aces dominate, even AAxx in PLO rarely has more than 65-70% equity preflop against a reasonable range.
How many cards are dealt in Pot-Limit Omaha?
Standard PLO (PLO-4) deals 4 hole cards to each player. Variants include PLO-5 (5 cards) and PLO-6 (6 cards). More hole cards mean tighter equities, bigger draws, and stronger made hands on average. Our calculator supports all three PLO variants so you can compare equity across formats.
What does pot-limit mean in Omaha poker?
Pot-limit means the maximum bet or raise you can make is the current size of the pot. For example, if the pot is $100, the most you can bet is $100. This betting structure creates a different dynamic than no-limit games — you cannot shove all-in preflop (except in short-stacked situations), which means post-flop play is crucial in PLO.
Why must I use exactly two hole cards in PLO?
This is the fundamental rule that distinguishes Omaha from Hold'em. You must use exactly 2 of your hole cards and exactly 3 community cards. This means if the board shows four hearts and you hold one heart, you do NOT have a flush — you need two hearts in your hand. This rule catches many beginners off guard and is essential for accurate hand reading.
What is a PLO5 calculator?
A PLO5 calculator computes equity for five-card Pot-Limit Omaha (also called 5-Card Omaha), where each player is dealt five hole cards instead of four. You still make your hand with exactly two hole cards and three board cards, but five cards produce ten two-card combinations per hand instead of six. Select the PLO-5 variant in the calculator above to run five-card equities, outs, and AI action guidance. This is an educational math tool, not a prediction of results.
How is 5-card Omaha equity different from 4-card PLO?
With an extra hole card, hands make more draws and stronger made hands on average, so equities run even closer together than in standard four-card PLO. Big preflop favorites are rarer, near-coinflip spots are more common, and nut potential and blockers matter more because more players connect with more boards. In practice that means post-flop position and pot control carry even more weight in five-card Omaha.
Is this an Omaha hand calculator as well as an odds calculator?
Yes. Enter your four, five or six hole cards plus any board cards and the calculator returns your exact hand strength, win/tie/loss equity and the best five-card hand available to you. It works as an Omaha hand calculator, equity calculator and odds calculator in one tool.
Does it work as a 6-card PLO calculator?
Yes. The calculator supports 4-card PLO, 5-card PLO (PLO5) and 6-card PLO (PLO6). Select the variant, enter your hole cards and it runs a Monte Carlo simulation across the remaining deck for that specific game.
How do I calculate Omaha equity against a specific hand?
Enter your hole cards, your opponent's hole cards and any board cards. The calculator simulates thousands of runouts and returns the exact percentage each hand wins, ties and loses, so you can see equity for the precise matchup rather than a generic range.
Is the PLO equity calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no signup, no download and no limit on the number of hands you run. It works in any mobile or desktop browser.
